Fibre Deployment in Dense Urban Corridors: 5 Lessons from Lagos

Rolling out metro fibre through congested city corridors demands more than good engineering. Here is what we have learned delivering projects on Lagos roads.


Deploying fibre optic infrastructure through dense urban corridors is as much a logistical challenge as a technical one. In a city like Lagos, every kilometre of route crosses traffic, traders, drainage and competing utilities — and the difference between a smooth rollout and a stalled one is usually preparation.

Lesson one: invest in route engineering before mobilisation. Surveying the corridor, confirming existing utilities and stress-testing the route against traffic management constraints saves weeks of rework. We treat as-built accuracy as a deliverable, not an afterthought.

Lesson two: plan civil works around the city's rhythm. Trenching and ducting in active commercial areas means scheduling for off-peak windows, coordinating with local authorities and keeping businesses informed. Good stakeholder management is good engineering.

Lesson three: protect the fibre chain end to end. A fibre link is only as reliable as its splices, closures and entry points. Consistent splicing standards, OTDR testing at every stage and weather-rated closures prevent the micro-faults that erode availability over time.

Lesson four: document everything. Handing over accurate as-builts, test results and GIS data protects the asset for years and makes future expansion far cheaper. Clients remember the contractor who left them with a maintainable network.

Lesson five: build for maintainability, not just commissioning. Access points, redundancy and clear labelling turn a one-time deployment into infrastructure that operations teams can actually support. The goal is a network that performs long after the civil crew has left site.
